Inloggen (log in): MijnOverheid (government portal) and Berichtenbox (government mailbox)

For newcomers who use Dutch government services, this guide explains how to check both digital and paper mail, handle alerts, and find help with access or with a letter.

Berichtenbox
On this page

Access your Berichtenbox via MijnOverheid

MijnOverheid serves people aged 14 and older who have a burgerservicenummer (BSN, citizen service number) and use Dutch government services. You log in at MijnOverheid using your DigiD or an approved European login. When you visit for the first time, provide your email address and your preferences. Under Instellingen (Settings), select digital senders and turn on alerts for new post and reminders about unopened post.

The portal is operated by Logius (the government’s digital services organisation).

Understand the role of each service

MijnOverheid displays your government information and lets you reach the Berichtenbox. The letter remains in the Berichtenbox, while an alert notifies you to look at it.

Select digital post separately for every organisation

Digital post is chosen for each organisation that takes part. Every sender determines which kinds of letters it sends digitally, on paper, or through both methods. Continue checking both channels unless that sender clearly states otherwise.

Once you have registered with a municipality, continue to check paper post as well. If MijnOverheid is new to you, activate your account when you first log in. For other tasks after arriving, use the First 90 days in the Netherlands: arrival checklist.

Activate MijnOverheid

If you need DigiD or are unable to use it, first follow the DigiD setup and recovery guide. After you have an approved login method, you can activate MijnOverheid.

Carry out these steps on the website:

  1. Go to MijnOverheid using a saved bookmark, or enter mijn.overheid.nl.
  2. Before you enter your details, verify the address; the DigiD login then continues on digid.nl.
  3. Choose Inloggen met DigiD, or use the European login option.
  4. Finish activation using an email address you actually read and the preferences displayed.
  5. Open Instellingen.
  6. Turn on Melding als er nieuwe post is (alert for new post).
  7. Turn on Herinnering als u post niet hebt geopend (reminder for unopened post).
  8. Go to Organisaties Berichtenbox.
  9. Before saving, review every sender you selected and what your choice means for paper post.

The optional Berichtenbox app displays messages and can send alerts to your phone. Before you use it, activate MijnOverheid and the DigiD app. You can download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. To change organisation preferences or read messages for someone who has authorised you, use the website.

Configure alerts and check your mail

Because email alerts may fail, set a regular reminder to open the Berichtenbox yourself. Review these four settings and habits:

Email addressUse an address you read. If possible, use one you do not share.Shared alerts may leave you unsure whose account has new post.
Alert settingsEnable new-post alerts and unopened-post reminders. The first tells you post arrived. The second reminds you to open it.
Email deliveryAdd [email protected] to safe senders. Check spam and mailbox capacity.A full mailbox or spam filter can hide an alert.
Regular checksSet a calendar reminder to check MijnOverheid. Keep app alerts on if you use it.A missing email does not prove there is no post.

Emails from MijnOverheid do not contain links. DigiD emails, text messages, and letters do not contain links or QR codes. To log in, use your bookmark or type the address. A familiar logo or sender address can be imitated.

Decide between digital and paper post

Your choice applies per sender, not to the entire government. The following situations explain which channels to check:

A connected organisation is selectedYou allow it to send digital post. Selected letter types may stop arriving on paper.Read the sender’s explanation before choosing.
A connected organisation is not selectedYou normally keep its available paper route.Review your choices when new organisations appear.
The sender uses both channelsCopies may arrive digitally and on paper during a transition.Keep both copies with the same case. Use the stated deadline; a second copy does not mean you should wait.

In December 2025, Belastingdienst (Tax Administration) introduced a choice between paper and digital. According to its guidance, paper continues if you take no action. The digital rollout begins with income-tax letters; some other post may still come on paper. You can change your choice at a later time. Other senders decide their own channels.

Read a letter and reply

A letter may include a decision or a request that has a deadline. Follow these steps to turn it into a task:

  1. Open unread messages, beginning with the oldest one. A deadline may already be counting down.
  2. Write down the sender, the letter date, the deadline, the action requested, and the reference number.
  3. If they are important for tax, benefits, residence, or a challenge to a decision, save the message and attachments outside the inbox. Messages remain in the Berichtenbox until you delete them.
  4. Reply using the channel stated in the letter. Replying through the Berichtenbox is not possible.

For questions about the decision, amount, or deadline, ask the sender. For technical access questions, ask MijnOverheid.

For instance, a letter asks you to send a document by 20 October 2026. Note that date and the reference number, save the letter, and send the document through the channel it states. Use the deadline in your own letter; this example does not create a deadline for any other letter.

For inburgering (civic integration), DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs, the Dutch education service) also places its letters in Mijn Inburgering (civic integration portal). Use the Mijn Inburgering guide to check letters, exam bookings, and results there.

Warning

Use the deadline stated in the decision

The usual period for bezwaar (formal objection) is six weeks after formal announcement. Certain decisions have shorter periods. Follow your decision: it says whether you can make bezwaar or beroep (appeal), where to send it, and by when. A failed email alert does not guarantee extra time. If the date may already have passed, contact the sender that same day. If the consequences are serious, get legal help.

Log in safely and handle fake messages

Open your post or protect your account through the official website. These checks can help you recognise a fake login request:

If you entered DigiD details on a fake site, type digid.nl and change your password immediately in Mijn DigiD. If you are unable to log in, call the DigiD helpdesk. Look at Gebruiksgeschiedenis (Usage history) for logins you do not recognise. Contact the helpdesk and any organisation shown in suspicious activity. If you entered bank details, contact your bank.

Authorise someone to help you

With DigiD Machtigen, a helper can use their own DigiD for a specified task and period. To read your Berichtenbox, the helper must agree and have their own MijnOverheid account. You choose which organisations they may access.

Fix common access and alert problems

If an alert is missing or your login is blocked, letters may be waiting in your account. Use the route that matches your problem:
