KNM study guide: practise with everyday situations
A small study guide for knowledge of Dutch society. Use it to connect a situation, a reliable source and an explained answer; it is not a complete KNM syllabus.
Know which resource you are using
KNM means Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij. It is different from KNS in the Basisexamen abroad. DUO describes themes such as housing and work/income and provides official KNM practice. Check Mijn Inburgering for the exams that apply to you.
Work on one topic at a time
Choose a situation you want to understand. For housing, ask who receives a repair report and what details are needed. For work/income, ask what a job notice or agreement says about the work, hours and contact person. These are study prompts, not rules about your rights or a list of all exam topics.
- Name the topic and the question you want to answer.
- Choose a relevant source; record its title, web address and the date you checked it.
- Write the answer in your own words. Keep any conditions or exceptions with it.
- If the source does not answer your question, write what is missing and where you will check next.
A worked study card: housing
The Dutch note below was written for this guide. It describes one fictional building's arrangement, not a rule for every home or an official KNM question.
Try before reading the explanation: who should receive a report about a broken hall lamp, and what detail should you give? Can this note tell you who must repair a lamp inside the tenant's own home?
What the card tells you—and what it does not
The note names the building manager for the shared hall and asks for the lamp number. It explicitly limits its scope to that hall. It does not establish responsibility inside a private home. For a real problem, check the relevant agreement or current information before deciding what to do.
Explain your answer from the source rather than guessing from one familiar word. Separating what is stated from what still needs checking is the purpose of this exercise.
Make your own study card

- My question: ____________________
- Source / web address / date checked: ____________________
- Answer and reason: ____________________
- What I still need to check: ____________________
- My next action: ____________________
Practise, check and revisit
- Cover the answer and explain the situation aloud or in writing.
- Reopen the source and correct your explanation; mark the part that supports it.
- Choose another situation on the same topic and ask what changes.
- Revisit your card in a later study session. If a rule or service detail matters in real life, check it again rather than relying on an old note.
Use official practice and keep the limits clear
Use DUO's current links below for official KNM information and practice. This guide does not reproduce official questions or replace official material. InburgerStap is independent of DUO, the IND and official exam providers. Working through a card does not register you, award a certificate or establish readiness.
