What is the Z-route?
The self-reliance route combines practical Dutch learning with participation. Your municipality records the programme and completion requirements in your personal plan.
Learn through daily activities
The route combines language learning with participation activities. Your municipality discusses the specific programme and support with you; check your PIP for the commitments that apply to your situation.
Know how completion works
The Z-route is generally completed through a final conversation with the municipality and leads to a certificate. Some participants may be allowed to take A2 exams, but whether this applies depends on the plan recorded for them.
Ask before booking an exam
Do not assume that every exam is compulsory or that an exam attempt is free. Confirm your permitted exam level and arrangements with your municipality or in Mijn Inburgering.
Agree how activities and progress are recorded
Ask your municipal contact which language lessons, practical activities, and attendance records belong to your programme. Keep the name of your contact and any agreed schedule. If health, literacy, or care responsibilities make an activity difficult, discuss support early; do not assume that another route or exam applies without an official decision.
