Who has an integration obligation in the Netherlands?

An integration duty does not apply in the same way to everyone. Residence purpose, age, nationality, education, and exemptions can all matter; check the official decision for your case.

Check your official status

DUO sends a letter when it records an integration obligation. Mijn Inburgering shows relevant dates and requirements. If you are unsure, ask DUO to explain the decision and check IND information for residence-related requirements.

Rules can differ

The applicable law and the date the duty began can change the process. Citizenship and residence applications can have separate integration requirements. Do not assume one rule applies to everyone.

Next step

Save the DUO letter and note any response date. Confirm your law and route before paying for a course or exam. Ask a qualified adviser if your status is complex.

Use the official notice as the starting point

If you receive a letter saying that you must integrate, check its start date, legal basis, and deadline in the portal. If no notice arrives or the details appear inconsistent with your residence or education status, ask DUO for an explanation and consult the relevant residence guidance before making a costly decision.
