Which Dutch exam fits your goal?

Different goals can involve different Dutch exams. Start with the authority’s letter or plan to identify the level and proof it accepts.

Separate the exam abroad from integration after arrival

The A1 basic exam abroad applies to some MVV applications. It has Speaking, Reading and knowledge of Dutch society components. After arrival, a separate integration duty may apply. The result and deadlines for one process do not replace the other.

Use your law and route to identify the level

For domestic integration, the 2013 system generally uses A2 exams. Under the 2021 system, the municipality records a learning route and exam level in the personal plan: the B1 route targets B1, the education route may target B1 or B2, and the Z-route focuses on language learning and participation with A2 exams usually optional. Follow any formal change recorded in your plan.

Check each component and deadline

A2 routes can include four language parts and KNM; some older cases also require ONA. NT2 Programme I is B1 and Programme II is B2, with four skills assessed separately. KNM may still be required alongside NT2. The A1 exam abroad is separate and can carry an MVV filing deadline after all parts are passed.

Verify before booking or paying

Sign in to the relevant official account or ask your municipality which parts are required. Check exemptions and fee support first. Book A2 through Mijn Inburgering, NT2 through MijnDUO, and A1 abroad through the registration process followed by an appointment with the local exam provider. If your goal is naturalisation, residence or professional registration, check that authority’s evidence rules too.
