How to register for the A1 exam abroad
When the A1 exam abroad is required, registration and appointment scheduling are separate steps. Check the responsible service, location, payment, and availability before planning travel.
Check whether you need the exam
The A1 exam abroad is linked to certain MVV applications, and exemptions or medical dispensation can apply. Check the IND rules for your residence purpose before paying. This exam is separate from any integration duty after arrival.
Register, select parts and pay
Use the official registration form to choose Knowledge of Dutch Society, Reading, Speaking, or all three, then select the country where you plan to sit the exam. In 2026, the listed fee is €150 for all parts or €50 for each part. DUO generally sends digital confirmation within five working days after payment; keep the candidate number and receipt.
Book with the local provider
Once the confirmation arrives, follow the embassy, consulate or provider instructions for that country. The DUO registration does not reserve an appointment. Some locations have limited availability; travel to another country may require a visa, so verify entry requirements before booking.
Prepare documents and changes
At the appointment, bring the confirmation, a valid passport and a recent colour passport photo. Check if the country requires extra proof of legal stay. The appointment can generally be changed once for date and once for location; submit a change or cancellation at least 24 hours ahead. Paper registration is available by request but can take up to ten weeks.
