Medical exemption from integration requirements

A health condition may lead to an exam adjustment, more time, or a formal waiver. These options have different tests, so identify the one that fits your situation.

Choose the route that matches the limitation

An adapted exam is for someone who can take the exam with accessibility changes. A deadline extension may help when illness caused a temporary delay. A medical exemption (ontheffing) is considered when a serious condition prevents integration in the foreseeable future; DUO decides after medical advice.

Request exam adjustments

For A2, apply for advice through Mijn Inburgering or the paper route if you cannot log in. DUO may refer you for an assessment and will send a decision describing the adjustment. Registration for the adapted A2 exam is completed using the designated paper form. For NT2, indicate personal circumstances during registration and wait for DUO to explain what evidence is needed.

Ask about extra time

DUO may extend the integration period for qualifying illness that lasted over three months and was treated by a doctor in the Netherlands, where the illness prevented timely completion. Evidence can include medical records, a pharmacy-stamped medication list or a clinician’s statement. Medical records are submitted through the secure channel DUO specifies.

Understand the medical exemption process

Applicants must be subject to the integration duty under the relevant law. The process can include an Argonaut medical assessment. DUO lists an application fee of €225; it is refunded if the exemption is granted, but not if the medical advice says integration should be possible within five years. Confirm the current fee and instructions before applying. Send records only to the medical professional identified by DUO.
