KNM: understand the format and organise the themes
Learn how the KNM format works and organise revision around its everyday society themes. Practise explaining which person or service fits a situation.
Understand the test format
The Knowledge of Dutch Society exam is a computer-based multiple-choice test. It takes about 45 minutes. Questions may use images or spoken prompts and cover ordinary situations. Check the latest DUO instructions for the exact format and your exam invitation for the location.
Organize the themes around daily life
Review housing and neighbourhoods, work and income, healthcare, education, public services, rights and responsibilities, and life in the Netherlands. For each theme, learn the common vocabulary and ask: who is responsible, what should the person do next, and where can they find official help?
Reason through a scenario
If a question describes a resident who needs to report a move, connect the task to the municipality. If it concerns a child missing school, the school needs an absence notice. For non-urgent medical care, the general practitioner is commonly the starting point. These are original study examples, not copied exam questions.
Practise with explanations
Use official sample questions to learn the screen and question style. After each answer, explain why it fits the situation and why another option does not. Review unfamiliar words by topic, then revisit them in a new scenario rather than memorizing isolated facts.
