Integration deadline: check your date and extension options

Check the official start and end dates for your integration period. If circumstances may justify extra time, find the right request process and supporting evidence early.

Find the start and end date

Under the 2021 law, DUO confirms the start date after the municipality completes the intake and personal integration plan. Under the 2013 law, the DUO notice gives the date. Check the latest DUO letter and Mijn Inburgering. The participation declaration deadline under the 2013 system may be a separate municipal deadline.

Know what an extension does

Extra time moves the completion deadline; the integration duty continues. It does not remove exams. An exemption or medical waiver is a different decision. DUO generally allows one extension for a given integration period, even when more than one qualifying reason arose during it.

Check the reason and timing

Extensions may be available for circumstances such as illness, pregnancy, study, work or family situations, but conditions differ. Many requests can only be filed once at least two and a half years of the period have passed. Some extensions may be applied automatically. Check the exact condition and whether your case needs an application.

Prepare evidence and keep records

Use the reason-specific checklist to gather evidence such as medical information, employment or study details, and course or exam records. Submit through the channel DUO specifies before the current deadline where possible. Save a copy of the request and any decision; contact DUO if the date shown in your account conflicts with a letter.
