How civic integration works after you arrive in the Netherlands

After arriving, confirm whether DUO has registered an integration duty and which law applies. Your official route determines who arranges learning, activities, and deadlines.

Read the first DUO notice

The letter tells you whether DUO considers you required to integrate and which law applies. Sign in to Mijn Inburgering to review required exams, tasks and deadline. Under the 2021 law, the municipality completes an intake and makes a personal integration plan with you.

Understand the two systems

The 2013 system generally places exam planning and progress directly with the learner and DUO. Under the 2021 system, the municipality assigns a learning route and guides progress; DUO records the formal start date and deadline. The route may be B1, education or self-reliance, each with different exams and participation tasks.

Check your own responsibilities

People with similar backgrounds may have different duties because of their residence purpose, age, education, status and dates. Some people are exempt or integrate voluntarily. Use the decision in your own file rather than assuming someone else’s checklist applies.

Plan the next step

Record the start date, deadline and each task. Ask the municipality about the PIP, lessons and MAP or PVT steps where applicable. Check DUO’s current fee, loan and exam booking information before committing to a course. If you disagree with a decision, follow the response route and time limit in the letter.
