Exam adjustments for illness or disability
If a standard exam setup creates a barrier, ask the provider about suitable arrangements early. The available adjustment and supporting evidence vary by exam and circumstance.
Choose the route for the exam you will take
An adapted exam changes how you take a test so the result can reflect what you know. It may involve extra time, a quieter room, larger text, assistive equipment, breaks, or a different way to enter an answer. The available changes depend on the exam and the barrier you describe.
For A2 language and knowledge exams, ask DUO for advice before you book. Use the adapted-exam request in Mijn Inburgering, or the paper form if you cannot access the portal. DUO may refer you for an assessment and then sends a decision describing any approved arrangement. Once it is approved, use the paper exam registration route to choose a date.
For the B1 or B2 State Exam NT2, indicate personal circumstances as part of registration. DUO will ask what support is needed and what evidence to provide. Not every location can offer every adjustment, so you may need another date or venue. For an exam abroad, follow the instructions for that exam and country.
Describe the obstacle and the change that would help
Explain the practical effect of the condition in the exam setting. For example, say whether small text, writing by hand, sustained sitting, a crowded room, or hearing audio once creates a barrier. Ask the exam provider which document it needs and how recent it must be; keep copies of the request, supporting evidence, and decision. Do not send original medical records unless the official form asks for them.
An adjustment, more time, and an exemption are different
If you can take the exam with a change to its format, request an adapted exam. If illness has interrupted your study period, check whether you can ask for an extension to the integration deadline. If a lasting condition makes the integration requirement impossible, investigate the separate medical exemption route. A request in one category does not automatically decide the others.
Before booking, confirm the correct exam provider, describe the support you need, and wait for the written decision. Practise using the approved format so the equipment, timing, and answer method are familiar on exam day.
