The B1 route: Dutch for work and participation
The B1 route combines language development with participation and preparation for work. Your personal plan sets the learning path and exam expectations.
Build language and participation together
The route is designed to develop Dutch while you take part in society, including through work or volunteering where appropriate. Discuss available activities and support with your municipality.
Check your exam combination
B1-route participants generally work toward B1 language exams and knowledge components. Some learners may be able to lower the language target to A2 after meeting conditions; this is not automatic.
Record important changes
If B1 is becoming difficult or your circumstances change, speak with your municipality early. Any agreed level adjustment or route change must be recorded in the PIP; verify the updated requirements before booking.
Review the plan at agreed checkpoints
Use regular meetings to discuss attendance, Dutch progress, participation, and any barriers to work or study. Ask which evidence the municipality uses to decide whether the route is on track. If B1 seems out of reach despite appropriate effort, raise the issue early so an authorised review can happen before the deadline.
