A2 exam: check which parts apply to you
Before preparing for A2, confirm that this level and each component belong to your case. Exemptions and different routes can change the checklist.
Confirm that A2 is the required level
Under the 2013 law, A2 language exams are generally required. Under the 2021 law, most people in the B1 route aim for B1; the municipality can record selected A2 parts in the personal plan after reviewing the conditions. The education and self-reliance routes have different requirements. Check your current plan or Mijn Inburgering before booking.
Check the parts and other tasks
The A2 set includes Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking, plus KNM when it applies. Some 2013 files also require ONA; PVT is a separate municipal task for certain cases. Under the 2021 system, MAP may replace ONA in some routes. Your letter and personal plan identify the applicable parts.
Know the format before you practise
Speaking, Reading, Listening and KNM are completed on a computer; Writing uses pen and paper. Official DUO materials describe the timing and question style. You pass each required part separately and retake only the part you did not pass.
Check payment, booking and timing
In 2026, the listed fee is €50 per A2 component, or €250 for five paid parts. Some people qualify for free attempts or a loan; others do not. Book each A2 or KNM part through Mijn Inburgering and check appointment availability. Allow time for the invitation and results, especially if a deadline is close.
