A2 speaking: match your answer to the task

A2 speaking may use a video or pictures and ask you to respond in different ways. Decide whether you need to describe, choose, explain, or give a direct answer.

Listen for the task

Some items ask a question about an everyday situation. Others ask you to describe one or more pictures or explain a preference. Listen for every instruction, including any follow-up request. A response that gives useful detail can still miss points if it answers only the first part.

Use a simple answer shape

For a question, answer directly and add one relevant detail. For a choice, name it and give a reason. For a picture, mention the people or objects the question asks about and say what is happening. For a sequence, use eerst (first), daarna (then) and tot slot (finally).

Example practice response

Prompt: What do you prefer, cycling or taking the bus, and why? Possible answer: Ik fiets liever, want mijn werk is dichtbij. (I prefer cycling because my work is nearby.) This is an original example; adjust the words to match the prompt and your own vocabulary.

Review your recording

Check relevance, completeness, understandable pronunciation and whether the sentences connect. Use familiar words accurately rather than adding details you cannot say confidently. DUO’s official practice exams help you learn the computer format; use a fresh prompt afterward to practise adapting your answer.
