A2 or B1: how to understand the difference

A2 focuses on everyday exchanges; B1 asks for more connected communication. Your official route or application sets the required level, regardless of preference.

At A2, handle familiar situations

Practice understanding and exchanging straightforward information about everyday topics. Build accuracy with common phrases and simple connected sentences.

At B1, explain and connect ideas

B1 generally involves following the main points and communicating about familiar subjects with more detail. You need to give reasons and link ideas across a response.

Follow the level in your plan

Use the PIP or official exam record to identify your required level. If you want a different target, discuss it with your municipality or the organisation that set the requirement before booking.

Compare tasks as well as labels

A2 practice builds routine exchanges and straightforward messages. B1 practice asks you to connect ideas and explain familiar topics with more detail. Try one sample at each level to see which skills need work, but use your official decision to determine the level you are required to take. A placement test can show what to practise next, but it does not change the level recorded by the responsible authority.
