A2 KNM: reason through a knowledge question
For a KNM item, identify the everyday situation and who is responsible for the next step. Use the topic clues to rule out answers that belong to another service.
Recognize the kind of question
Some prompts ask for the first action or the correct service; others test a right, institution or fact about Dutch society. Read the final question before using the image. The picture gives context, but the words tell you what decision to make.
Match the situation to the responsible service
A routine health concern usually starts with a general practitioner. Emergency danger calls for emergency services. A move is reported to the municipality; unemployment benefits are handled by UWV, while child benefit is through SVB. Learn the distinction between income tax and allowances, and between municipal support and national services.
Check rights, work and money terms
Questions may cover equal rights, school attendance, contracts, gross and net pay, rent, healthcare insurance or public services. Watch for absolute words such as altijd (always), nooit (never) and automatisch (automatically); the rule may depend on the person or situation.
Use a five-step answer routine
Name the theme, identify the problem, match the relevant Dutch rule or organization, compare all options and check that the answer responds to the question. Review mistakes by theme instead of memorizing one answer. Official KNM materials describe the objectives and help verify current facts.
