Practise speaking for the A1 exam abroad

For A1 speaking, practise giving brief answers that fit the prompt. Record yourself, listen for clarity, and vary the details instead of memorising a script.

Answer familiar questions directly

For “What do you eat for breakfast?” you could say: Ik eet brood en fruit. (I eat bread and fruit.) For “How do you travel to work?”: Ik ga met de bus. (I go by bus.) Use a short sentence with the detail the question requests.

Complete a sentence from context

Prompt: Mila heeft het koud. Ze doet haar… (Mila is cold. She puts on her…). Completion: jas. (coat.) Another practice prompt: De winkel is dicht. Ik kom… (The shop is closed. I come…). Possible finish: morgen terug. (back tomorrow.) Say only enough to finish the sentence logically.

Repair answers that miss the task

If asked where you live, “Ja” does not answer the question. Try Ik woon in Utrecht. (I live in Utrecht.) If a question asks why you study Dutch, give a reason: Omdat ik hier werk. (Because I work here.) Use your own life details so answers feel natural.

Record, listen and adapt

Practise both task types: ten everyday questions and twelve sentence completions in a full set. After each recording, check whether the answer fits and whether each word is clear. Then change the person, place or activity and repeat. Short, accurate answers are easier to understand than an unfinished long sentence.
