After the A1 exam abroad: result validity and next steps

Keep the result notice for the A1 exam abroad and check its validity against your application timeline. The exam result is one item in a wider residence process.

The one-year period starts after all three parts are passed

The A1 exam abroad includes Knowledge of Dutch Society, reading, and speaking. Each part has its own result. If you pass some parts but not all, keep the result PDF and retake only the parts you failed; successful parts remain valid while you finish the exam.

Once the third part is passed, DUO issues the complete result document. The issue date on that PDF starts a one-year period for submitting the MVV application. If you apply after that period has expired, you may have to take the full exam again. This deadline concerns the exam abroad and the MVV route; it is different from A2 exam results in the Netherlands.

Check the score and request another attempt when needed

The result document identifies the score for each part. Check the official assessment rules for the pass threshold and how speaking is marked. If you need a retake, register and pay for the failed component, then arrange a new appointment under the instructions for the embassy, consulate, or provider. The timing for the result and the appointment can vary, so allow room before your residence application deadline.

Prepare the application file while you wait

Compare the name and passport details on the result with your application documents. Check which civil records need translation or legalisation, gather sponsor information, and follow the document list for your residence purpose. You or your sponsor may submit the application, depending on the route. The exam result satisfies the exam condition, but the IND still assesses the remaining residence requirements.

Continue integration after arrival if required

Passing the A1 exam abroad does not automatically complete any integration duty that applies after you move to the Netherlands. After arrival and municipal registration, follow DUO’s letters and your municipality’s instructions. Check your start date and required exams before booking another course or exam.
