Can you skip the A1 exam abroad?
Some applicants may not need the A1 exam abroad, but eligibility depends on the residence route and personal evidence. Check the rule before paying or scheduling.
Check whether the A1 exam abroad applies to your case
The basis exam abroad is tied to certain residence applications. Before paying or arranging travel, read the current IND rules for your application and check whether an exemption or dispensation could apply. Your result for the exam abroad and your later integration duty after moving are separate questions.
Exemption and dispensation use different grounds
An exemption applies when a defined condition fits your circumstances, such as an age, nationality, residence, education, or recognised Dutch-language qualification rule. The official list also includes specific application categories. A dispensation is assessed individually when a medical condition, disability, or personal circumstances prevent you from taking or passing the required parts. The decision maker may consider your attempts and the evidence you provide; a diagnosis alone may not explain the barrier.
Prepare documents for the ground you rely on
Use the IND appendix for the exam abroad to identify what to submit. Depending on the ground, this may include a residence document, education records, a certified diploma copy, a grade list, or evidence about your situation. For a medical request, follow the embassy or consulate instructions about an appointed doctor and the required medical form. Keep copies and make sure any time limits on documents are met.
Submit the request with the residence application
Complete the relevant appendix, attach the evidence listed for that ground, and include it with the MVV application when that is your route. The sponsor in the Netherlands usually submits an MVV and residence permit application together. If the authority asks for missing documents, follow the response deadline in that letter. Do not treat a request as approved until you receive a decision.
If you still need to take the exam, check the official registration route, preparation material, and the validity period for the completed result before making a plan. Confirm the rules again near the application date, because eligibility and appointment instructions depend on your specific case.
